NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A New York City correctional officer stood charged Monday with shooting his own son, following a fight after his son was allegedly caught shoplifting.

Robert Smalls, 39, was charged Sunday night in connection with the incident at his home in Woodside, Queens, police told 1010 WINS.

His son, Quasaun Smalls, had been picked up by police after allegedly stealing items from a Home Depot store, according to reports in the New York Post and Daily News. Police had released the 17-year-old with a desk appearance ticket, while his father had wanted him held in custody and processed through Central Booking for an arraignment as a lesson, the newspapers reported.

Quasaun Smalls and his father got into an argument that turned physical, and finally, Robert Smalls allegedly shot his son once in the midsection with a 9mm handgun, the newspapers reported.

Robert Smalls called 911 and paramedics took his son to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was expected to recover from his wounds, according to the Daily News.

The Post reported Robert Smalls used his service weapon in the shooting.
